THE NEED FOR A COMPREHENSIVE MANAGEMENT PLAN

The Office of Mauna Kea Management (OMKM) determined that a comprehensive management plan (CMP) was needed for the lands on Mauna Kea managed by the University of Hawai'i.  The CMP is intended to provide OMKM a guide for managing existing and future activities to ensure Mauna Kea’s unique cultural and natural resources are protected in perpetuity.  The process of developing the CMP involved an extensive analysis of the resources and threats to them.  The CMP development process also entailed soliciting community input on a range of issues, as well as the development of effective and appropriate management strategies.

This website was created as a tool to facilitate community involvement in the development of the Mauna Kea CMP. Visitors to the site will find an extensive range of materials to educate and inform themselves about Mauna Kea, its resources and the issues related to its use and management. The site also provides those interested a way to “tell us what you think” about the management of Mauna Kea.
