Mauna Kea Comprehensive Management Plan
Under the coordination of Ku‘iwalu and OMKM, the CMP took a community-based planning approach to re-affirm many of the issues that the community raised in the past and recommended culturally and environmentally appropriate measures for the management of Mauna Kea.
Ku‘iwalu held two rounds of public meetings throughout Hawai‘i Island to seek input on the Comprehensive Management Plan (CMP) for Mauna Kea. The first round of meetings, held between May 6 through May 13, provided information on the purpose of the CMP, re-affirmed key management issues that have been raised over the past few years, and sought the community’s recommendation on appropriate cultural and environmental management guidelines, pertaining to the Mauna Kea Science Reserve.
At the second round of public meetings, held between Nov. 14 through Nov. 18, Ku‘iwalu presented for community review a draft of the CMP. This presentation gave the public another opportunity to provide comments on the proposed CMP.
In addition to holding public meetings, Ku‘iwalu gathered input from the community through a series of small talk-story sessions, group meetings with community organizations, and through our online Tell Us What You Think form. Organizations who would like Ku‘iwalu to give a presentation regarding the CMP are encouraged to contact us.
